Serving the largest population of undocumented students in the state, California Community Colleges are committed to serving ALL students, regardless of immigration status. Undocumented Student Action Week, October 14-18, 2019, is a system-wide campaign to advocate and provide support resources for our undocumented student population. During the week, California's community colleges are encouraged to engage in advocacy and support efforts in solidarity with undocumented students throughout the state.

Undocumented Student Action Week (USAW) is supported statewide by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, the Community College League of California, the Foundation for California Community Colleges, Immigrants Rising, and the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. The Action Week partners support colleges in planning their own action week by providing suggested activities, materials, resources and more.

Using the Critical Race Tool of Racial Microaggressions
to Examine Everyday Racism and Racist Nativism in Academic and Social Spaces

Professor Daniel Solorzano will use a Critical Race Theory framework and the tools of racial microaggressions to study everyday racism and racist nativism inside and outside of college spaces. He will share various forms of data and working models to examine racial microaggressions, exploring the trajectory of this research and the questions yet unanswered. Lastly, Prof. Solorzano will engage our colleagues in a dialogue about how we can improve the college learning environments to maximize engagement, learning, and discovery for our increasingly diverse communities.

The objectives of the presentation are to:

  1. Help participants gain a better understanding of racial microaggressions and their
    impact on the campus racial climate;

  2. Increase participants’ effectiveness at recognizing, interrupting, and responding to racial
    microaggressions; and

  3. Discuss tools and strategies for developing an on-going inclusive campus racial climate.
